Those who know Semachign “Sammie” Mebratu at Ironbridge were not surprised to see her at work on the day of a recent major snow storm. In the two years the certified nursing assistant has worked at The Crossings at Ironbridge, she has shown dedication to her work and the residents.

Sammie Harmony HeroeThe folks at Ironbridge were pleased to welcome Greg McQuade, a reporter from the Richmond CBS-6 station, who was featuring Sammie on “Heroes Among Us,” a segment that spotlights people in our community who go above and beyond.

That certainly describes Sammie.

On that snowy day, she left her home at 4:00 am to get to work on time. That meant walking 1 ½ hours through the storm along Route 10, which locals know has no sidewalks. It also meant being snowed in at work for the weekend.

But to Sammie, that’s what it’s all about.

“I like to go one mile extra,” she told the reporter.

Sammie has been a CNA for 12 years after coming to the United States from Ethiopia in 1998. She has 3 children, 2 sons and a daughter, and two of her children are in graduate school right now.

We thank Sammie for her commitment and encourage you to watch the segment on CBS 6.
